More Common Verbs

The table below shows 10 common verbs in Greek that use three new sets of verb endings that we haven't looked at in detail. The first 6 are passive verbs and which commonly use endings such as ομαι/ΟΜΑΙ or αμαι/ΑΜΑΙ for the first pεrson singluar. The last four are active verbs using the ω/Ω ending in first person singular, but notice how the other endings differ from the active verbs (such as θελω/ΘΕΛΩ - ) we have used before. The most common endings "-ω/-εισ/-ει/-ουμε/-ετε/-ουν" change to "-ω/-σ/-ει/-με/-τε/-ουν".

And although the past tense is something that is really for year 2, here are to verbs that are very useful for the tourist in the past tense forms:
έχασα/ΕΧΑΣΑ - I lost, eg έχασα το διαβατήριο μου/ΕΧΑΣΑ ΤΟ ΔΙΑΒΑΤΗΡΙΟ ΜΟΥ - I lost my passport
ξέχασα/ΞΕΧΑΣΑ - I forgot, eg ξέχασα το πόρτοφολι μου/ΞΕΧΑΣΑ ΤΟ ΠΟΡΤΟΦΟΛΙ ΜΟΥ - I forgot my wallet
Notice the connection between the combination of verb to think (ξέρω/ΞΕΡΩ) with "I lost" (έχασα/ΕΧΑΣΑ). So "to forget" is liturally built up from "the though that is lost" - ξέρω + έχασα = ξέχασα
